Plate-Busters: Debunking Food Myths.

Updated: Oct 22, 2020

Have you ever avoided cheese because of the weight loss program? Do you fear consuming different frozen foods just because your elders told you not to? Exercising twice a day and still getting no results?

Well, I have debunked some of the most common food myths for you.

1) Frozen Food can be harmful for health.

The opposite is true actually.if we discuss the taste of frozen meat and fresh meat, obviously fresh will be better but even if it's frozen there's no harm. Some vegetables are best when frozen. Vegetables are frozen within hours of cutting. In addition, some vegetables like peas for example start to spoil immediately after harvest, so to prevent that they have to be frozen.

2) Desi ghee has an adverse impact on health.

The debate over ghee and the fats that it contains are either good or bad has been going on for some time. If I talk about Ayurveda, desi ghee has always been put into the category of positive and healthy ingredients. It has linoleic acid, a type of fatty acid, and other compounds in it that aid absorption of vitamins and minerals dissolved in the fat. In fact, ghee is considered a healthier substitute of refined oils and butters, which are highly processed.

3) Non-stick pans are safe to use.

Well it's both true and false. The best part is that you can cook using less oil and butter. Talking about the cons, some nonstick pans use a chemical called PFOA, which releases hazardous gases into the air at high temperatures and therefore you shouldn't use these pans while cooking at high temperatures. These gases can cause flu symptoms in humans and can even kill the chicken and its nutrients so i would suggest you to use cast iron when roasting, steaming non vegetarian food at high temperatures. It is safe and flavorful for food. You may find that nonstick pans are rarely used in professional kitchens. On the other hand, many nonstick pans are made without the use of hazardous chemicals these days. If you find them anywhere, it's better to use non-stick cookware.

4) Exercise is enough for weight loss.

Exercise is beneficial for you in many ways and will therefore keep you fit and active but it's not the only thing to do when losing weight. Running and jogging for 30 minutes burns 410 calories. When you come back and eat a chocolate pastry, you consume around 350 calories. A balanced diet in addition to exercise will create a calorie deficit and is the most appropriate way to lose weight. Calorie deficit simply means consuming fewer calories in comparison to the number of calories you're burning. However, if you only need to prefer one, choose a diet over exercise.

5) Fish and milk should not be consumed together.

You will remember that your mother told you to avoid drinking milk after eating fish, as it can cause acne and white spots on the skin. This is a very common belief among Indians and Indian households. Scientifically, there is no evidence that fish and milk is a toxic or unhealthy combination for your skin or body. In fact, there are many delicious recipes that contain this mixture and if you should definitely give them a try if you are a fish lover!

6) Bananas will help you gain weight

All thin folks must have heard this once in their life. However, there is no research or proof found for the same. High fiber and low calorie content make bananas the best fruit that you can have. If you feel less hungry, buying a banana is always a good idea. They can fill your stomach for a while. Like any fruit you should definitely eat bananas, but we can surely say that it won't make you gain weight.

7) Salads are known to be the healthiest food when on a diet.

The fact is that salads are not always your best calorie supplement. Now talking about Chili Chicken Caesar Salad (filled with salad dressing, croutons, cheese and chicken) for instance contains 1,050 calories and 80 grams of fat. On the other hand, a grilled chicken garden salad with non-fat honey mustard dressing has only 200 calories and 7 grams of fat.

It's always the ingredients that make the difference in salad calories. If you have layered your salad with cheese dressings, mayonnaise, nuts and fried chicken strips we recommend you to order a king sized burger along with fries and extra coke.

8) Microwaves can make food toxic.

They are absolutely safe to use. If you cook vegetables in the microwave, you will not lose the nutrients, but if you boil them, you will throw the nutrients out with the water. Microwave ovens do not expose your food to radiation for a significant period of time as they are electromagnetic and not radioactive.
