I’m One Track Minded and Proud

Humans tend to multitask, trying to complete every responsibility in due time. Have you ever wondered why despite your work getting done you were never able to concentrate upon and understand one task at its best?

There are various reasons for this considering different people and tasks, but the problem is common: Loss of Attention! We are losing our attention span, taking leaps from one thought to another. We are now struggling behind the unostentatious goldfish when it comes to focusing on one particular task or object.

Currently, whilst being surrounded by smartphones and computers we try to become like them, wanting to do everything at once and not paying attention to one particular thing at a time.

I assure you that even now, while reading this article there must be a thousand things running in your head and you probably won't even get to the end of this article, given one’s minimal attention span these days.

As we all know that interruptions have a catastrophic impact on concentration, but how would you feel knowing that those interruptions are contributing to a 10-15-point decrease in your IQ, which makes an adult the same as the IQ of an 8-year old? It is quite difficult to manage personal and professional life without the domination of distractions, but it’s time you ask yourself, was it always like this?

Over time, our responsibilities are increasing and the attention span is constantly decreasing.

We do not lose attention only because of the presence of physical distractions but emotional too. Emotional distractions like inner dialogue, things going on in life, memories, thoughts, anxiety, etc. are distractions that are craving our attention the most and which is why staying focused has become so difficult.

But it is only you who can decide between staying focused or getting distracted.

Among all the other things that someone might be mislaid, the one that has a huge effect on our ability to do things is the loss of attention.

With so many tasks and distractions, it may take you a little time to pull through, but you need to prioritize your tasks based on urgency and importance. Paying attention and avoiding distractions are interlinked to your long-term goals and success.

With the abundant amount of notifications ringing around you and in your head all day, it has become so difficult to have focus. While studying in class we start thinking about some pending work that we have, while working our mind starts thinking about academics and it has all become extremely messed up. All the loss of attention span has always been blamed on our smartphones and desktops but now it seems we cannot even focus on this multitasking, technologically advanced devices.

One might wonder, why is all of this happening in the first place? The level of concentration varies depending on factors like dedication to the task, interest, ability, physical and emotional state, and conducive environment. To regulate these factors and achieve the right mindset, the first thing to do is to identify the cause of the situation and work on it. There are various ways to manage attention problems like taking small breaks while working and allowing the brain to process the information, discouraging frenetic work patterns, using planners, and organizing work correctly. Also, meditation, exercises, and good sleep help the brain to relax which may help you stay focused.

You can now congratulate yourself for focusing long enough, for you have reached the end of the article!
