When we talk about culture, the first thing that comes to our mind is art, music, and maybe traditions born from the dust of century-old rituals. But what about cultures that haven’t been explored? If culture is the customs, ideas, and beliefs of a particular society or country. It is also the thought of the existence of someone out there, who is our other half. Our twin flame.
But what is a twin flame? How are they different from soulmates, and most importantly, how did they come into being?
For us to get these answers, we must time travel to the very start.
In the ‘Symposium’, Apollo has Aristophanes tell us a story about the first set of humans created. It is believed that in the very beginning, humans were a little different. The human gender consisted of 3 types. Man, woman, and the ‘Androgynous’ which in Greek literature means ‘Both man and woman’. Each body, irrespective of their gender, had four arms, four legs, one head made up of two faces with both ‘Man’ and ‘Woman’ having the same sex and the Androgynous having both male and female genitalia.
Humans in this form were also said to be physically very strong and powerful. Powerful enough to overrule the Gods. The Gods at Olympus started to fear being thrown out of their ruling. Hence, they decided to strike humans with a bolt of lightning and end them once and for all. But they soon realized that in doing so, they would not have anyone left to rule over.
On one dark day, Zeus came up with the idea of splitting humans everywhere, doubling their number and making them weak. So, in the blink of an eye, humans were split into two, flesh open, left to live in misery and pain. This pain made them lose their will to live and had them starving themselves to death. Apollo, the God of music, truth & prophecy, healing & light, couldn’t bear this disturbing and heart-wrenching sight. So he sewed them up, tied their skin back together, leaving the naval as the only reminder of their original form.
Condemning humans all over the world to spend their life longing for their other half. Two lost souls, looking not to be complete, but the whole, once again. Contrary to popular belief, one can have multiple soul mates. However, when it comes to twin flames, ‘twin’ being the operative word, there can only be one.
The concept of opposites attract is born from the idea of twin flames. Our twin flame is the polar reflection of us. They are everything we’re not, yet deep down wish to be.
The sour to our cream. The yin to our yang. The light to our darkness. The butterfly wing to our catastrophe.
Twin flames are also said to be cataclysmic in nature, just like an earthquake is cataclysmic to barren ground. They bring with them destruction. That is why among the pair, one is the runner and the other the chaser.
The merging of the twin flames is not easy, but once the souls rise above arrogance and denial, the universe creates magic.
Across centuries and worlds, people have witnessed the merging of the twin flames. The most classic Greek twin flame archetype is Ares, the God of war, and Aphrodite, the Goddess of love. They are both physically and emotionally attracted to each other due to their polar opposite nature.
War – love.
Pain – Pleasure.
Some people have their first cry and also flatline without having met their twin flame, lost forever, whereas some are fortunate enough to reunite and find the part of them that was torn and thrown on the other side of the world due to a dirty war of pride, power, and position.
In other cultures, it is also believed that even if it takes several lifetimes, once humans have paid their karmic dues, they reunite with their twin flame and travel back to the Divine.
It is believed that Romeo and Juliet were twin flames, but because their karma hadn’t been settled, they couldn’t complete the merge.
Twin flames across all myths and cultures are souls that are meant to be pulled towards each other and, after facing great difficulties, fit into one another like a glove.
Just like the stars are meant to obey the rules of daylight.
The thunderstorm is meant to scream and echo through the candy floss clouds. We are meant to be aligned with our soul twin and light up like flames, burning away for all of eternity.
